Thanksgiving - How Do You Split It?
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and once again, it's just me and the cats and I'm OK with that. I do have an invitation from a wonderful neighbor to come eat at her house and I'll probably take her up on that, but I won't stay all night. I'm looking forward to getting a lot done in four kid-free days. By the time the kids get home, the Christmas lights will be up, the house will be festive, the Christmas cards will all be addressed and the tree will be up, lit and ready to decorate.
My kids, by terms of our mediation agreement, will always go to Dad's for Thanksgiving. I actually wanted it that way - I have no family around for a thousand miles and they always get to see the relatives on the other side of their family, and that means a lot to them. I know our arrangement is unique, but it works best for the kids.
I know a lot of children of divorce feel tossed around at the holidays, bouncing from one house to the next and splitting time with their parents. Aisha Harris wrote a heartfelt article for Slate about the coming together of her divorced parents one year for Thanksgiving, and how much it meant to her.
I can't imagine ever sharing Thanksgiving again with Peter (though I do miss my in-laws something fierce). Then again, things are just too raw for us, still. Who knows where we'll be ten or twenty years down the road? Maybe we'll do it for the kids. Maybe we'll do it for the grandkids. I guess time will tell.
