Use whole cloves. These can be inserted into the pockets of clothing and bags or can be placed into sachets and hung from coat hangers.
Use the sunshine. For items such as books and clothing that have been stored in a chest with mothballs, try leaving in the sunshine and fresh air for a few days to improve the odor. Be careful of fading, however, and don't use direct sunlight if this is a possibility.
