Couples across the UK will soon be able to tie the knot in an outdoor ceremony
Couples will soon be able to tie the knot in an outdoor ceremony, as a major review of the UK's current wedding laws is set be announced by chancellor Philip Hammond in Monday's Budget.
The existing regulations on bridal venues - which are now over 180-years-old - specify that weddings must take place in solid structures which have a permanent roof. This means that couples in England and Wales can't say "I do" under a marquee, in their garden or on the beach.
The strict regulations also prevent weddings from taking place in spaces where food or drink can be served before or after the nuptials - further limiting choice.
In a bid to help cut costs and give brides-to-be more choice when it comes to choosing the all-important venue, the government will ask the Law Commission to reconsider the UK's current legislation.
"While the laws around who can get married have evolved substantially in recent years, the laws on how and where marriages must take place have remained largely unchanged since 1836," a Treasury spokesperson said. "This review will help the law keep pace with modern Britain, while helping people keep the cost of living down."
A recent study conducted by wedding website Hitched.co.uk revealed that the average cost of a UK wedding has soared to its highest figure in recent years.
According to the company, the average couple spends at least £32,000 when planning their big day. Unsurprisingly, Londoners can expect to foot an even more impressive bill with the average wedding costing a grand total of £41,500 - which equates to 52% more than the average UK salary.
If couples can tie the knot in their own garden or without having to travel to a nearby registry office, soon-to-be newlyweds will have more money to spare for their honeymoon and the opportunity to snap up a gram-worthy location.
